Embrace the Seasonal Workout Switch

As the leaves begin to change colour and the days get shorter, it can be a nice opportunity to adapt your workout routines to suit the seasonal requirements of autumn and winter. While summer and spring often calls for outdoor cardio adventures and early morning walks or late evening runs, autumn and winter invites us to explore new activities that can keep us active and energised regardless of the weather outside.

Here are some suggestions to switch-up your exercise regimen for the cooler seasons. Remember that variety is the spice of life! It is important to occasionally change up your training and also consider cross training to help improve your functional capacity across multiple activities.

  1. Pilates.
    Always my favourite go-to as the weather changes. Pilates offers a low-impact options for exercise that focuses on building core strength, improving flexibility and enhancing your posture. With its strong focus on controlled movements and breathing it is also a great way to manage stress.
    Whether you are a seasoned pro or a complete beginner Pilates offers a challenging but accessible workout, it can target muscles that you never knew you had! It is a great way to build excellent core strength to support your summer cardio exercises.

  2. Indoor Rock Climbing.
    Trade your running shoes for climbing shoes and give indoor rock climbing a go. This exhilarating activity will not only challenge your strength and agility, but also provides a mental workout as you strategise your way up the wall.
    Most climbing gyms will have a range of options for beginners right up to advanced limbs. Indoor rock climbing offers a fun and rewarding full-body workout plus, perhaps by the start of summer you might be ready to tackle some outdoor climbing.

  3. Dance Class.
    Let loose and dance your way into a dance class. From salsa to hip-hop to ballroom to burlesque - there’s a style to suit every taste and skill level. Not only does dancing give you a fantastic cardiovascular workout but it also boosts mood, coordination and confidence.
    If you are already a dancer taking another dance style is a fantastic way to cross-train! It challenges your mind and body and helps develop your skills.

  4. Yoga.
    Wrap yourself in some comfortable relaxed clothing and roll out your yoga mat for a soothing yoga session. As the weather cools down and you start to feel a little more stiff, yoga offers a gentle and peaceful option to stretch, strengthen and unwind.
    There are different styles to suit your preferences from gentle flow, a challenging vinyasa sequence or a long and long yin. Yoga can help you find your centre and embrace the calming nurturing vibes that autumn brings.

If the seasonal weather is starting to dampen your exercise routine or perhaps your regular routine is starting to feel a little stale, consider changing it up. Embracing a change in routine with the change of season can help keep you active, engaged and inspired all year round.
